Harry had inherited two different kinds of family magic. The first, the one he and Sirius had been expecting, was the Potter family magic. To the best of Sirius's knowledge, it mostly concerned creating objects imbued with power, or changing their nature.

The magic contained in the second grimiore though, was a mystery. Harry stroked a finger over the clasp holding the book closed and felt the prick he'd expected. He was shut away in the room Grandfather Arcturus had set aside for him to research his family magic in. Under his hands, the clasp shifted, twisting and changing until it separated completely, allowing Harry to open it.

Sirius

Sirius had sort of known that there was something odd about all three of Harry's friends. Katherine, of course, was the avatar of a god as well as a seer, so her oddness could be explained. That Katherine credited them for breaking her into Azkaban was notable, but it didn't occur to any of the Blacks that the two boys could be just as magically unusual. However, spending time around all three children made the ways in which Sylvanus and Naruto were equally strange obvious.

The three children were around often enough that he picked up on things, like the sharp minds and quick reactions they all shared. With Harry as a comparison, it was clear to Sirius that the trio were frankly, too patient and focused to be normal. While they could simply be a trio of unusually bright and mature children, it was rather suspicious.

Alastor Moody had finally managed to wrangle a meeting with Lysander Urien's little runes prodigy. He'd spent three weeks trying replicate the effects from the runes experts' notes (the sensible girl hadn't let them have a full copy) and utterly failed.

His request to meet with Lysander's little ward was initially refused outright, and he could respect the man being wary about having strangers around his children. But then, a few days after the first owl had arrived, a second appeared, inviting Alastor to Urien Manor.

Alastor had no idea what had changed, but he wasn't about to miss out on the possibility of obtaining protection for his eyes.

Sirius stepped out of the floo into the familiar office, dressed in the robes Halton had somehow managed to have tailored in less than a day.

"Sirius," Dumbledore greeted him, "my dear boy, it is so good to see you, sit down, sit down." He gestured to the chair Sirius had sat in every time he was in trouble during his schooldays.

"Morning, Professor," Sirius responded, taking a seat.

By the time he visited the Black Manor, Alan had mostly recovered from the revelation that Shikako Nara had died with him and been reborn. He had convinced his superiors that Sirius was bound to silence, written a detailed report on the abilities of Shikabane-hime that drew on nothing he knew of the little girl he'd failed. If Shikako was acting against Pettigrew, then he wasn't going to get in her way. Knockout tags and seal knowledge explained how she'd been able to keep him captive. The only question Alan had concerned her reasons for keeping Pettigrew for so long. He had no way of finding out, so he put those thoughts aside in favour of mentally filing the week's gossip for tea with Madam Cassie.( Read more... )

The first Amelia heard of what would become known as the "Sirius Black Situation" was the man's request to contact his family head, which had eventually found its way to her desk. Such requests were exceedingly rare from Azkaban inmates, especially after they'd been imprisoned for more than a month or so. The request from Heir Black was therefore highly unusual. She couldn't make sense of it – why now? What had changed? He couldn't have received any new information in prison, and if he had something to say to his house head then why hadn't he sent the request years earlier?

Neville liked Sylvanus. Their parents had been arranging for them to play together occasionally as long as Neville could remember.

Sylvanus was quiet, but not quiet the way Neville was. Neville was quiet because he stumbled over his words, and he always said something silly when he opened his mouth. Sylvanus wasn’t nervous about talking, he just generally couldn’t be bothered to speak. He was very clever, Neville’s Gran said, already doing magic. Neville had even seen him walking up trees a couple of times.

Shikako

It didn’t take long for Shikako to come to the conclusion that whatever had brought Sasuke with her had likely brought Naruto too. She was pretty sure they’d been together when they died. In between developing seals to counter dementor influence, developing a combat skillset for the magical world, and checking on Harry, they made trips to both muggle and magical population centres, searching for Naruto’s distinctive chakra signature.

Even making regular night trips, and going with Sylvanus’s parents whenever they went to large cities or magical social events, it took most of a year before they found him.

Chapter 1

Shikako

At first Shikako, thought this world was the same as her first. There was a strange energy as well as her chakra, but everything else seemed to be normal 20^th century England. Her parents were loving, if distant, and Shikako (now Katherine Darby) focused on adjusting to her new body, keeping up the chakra use she’d retained from her previous life, and experimenting with the ways the new energy differed from natural chakra.

She worked on adjusting her seals to function with the new energy, and ingrained habit had her acquiring money, food and changes of clothing and stashing them in hammerspace.

Occasionally she sensed flashes of not-chakra, and people with developed not-chakra systems, but it wasn’t until she was five and following her parents through London that she figured out where she was.
